Housing in Tokyo
- Land prices have been among the most serious problems facing Tokyo.
- -land prices have fallen since the 1900s
- - no one who does not inherit land usually never owns land in the old city --> estate taxes can take away family land
- - people who can afford to live closer in usually have small condiminium appartments
- - people who have less money might be able to rent a cramped apartment in the public housing structures called danchi
- -To commute to work peoples commute could be as long as 4 or 5 hours round trip
This is what is called a micro apartment. These apartments are very common and very often found in Tokyo.
This man in this picture is living in what they call a "coffin apartment". That little tiny space is where he lives. The shape resembles a coffin hence the name.
