- March 9th, 1945 Air Raid--> 100,000 people killed, a quarter of the city burnt to the ground, 267,000 buildings destroyed, a million homeless.
- Many war crimes occurred during the first part of the Showa Era, especially during World War II
- After the war, Japan's military was dismantled and trials for war crimes were held
- The Emperor forfeited his political and military influence, and a democracy was established
- "Economic Miracle"-->Throughout the post-war period, Japan's economy boomed, prompted by the impact of the Korean War (1950-1953).
- The 1973 oil crisis rocked the oil-dependent Japanese economy, and began a shift to high technology industries.
- The 1980's saw continued economic progress.
- 1940 to 1945--> population dropped from 7 million to 3.5 million
